One of my fondest and earliest childhood memories is of the 1st time that I got my haircut in a barbershop. Suddenly my dad no longer cut my hair and he took me to a building with a big red, white and blue tube that spun around right outside of its door. He opened the door and there was nothing but guys hanging out. I had never seen anything like it.
At my age the barbershop was massive! The floor was covered with black and white tiles and mirrors lined the walls. I could hear the distinct buzzing of the barber’s clippers as the barbers used different ones on the men’s hair. But what really stood out was what the men were sitting in. I knew they were chairs but they weren’t you regular chairs. Where I come from, at that time, you didn’t see the chairs that reclined and had fluffy foot stools attached to them. Hence my introduction to the barber’s chair.
Back then, barber’s chairs were bright red and they were huge to a little guy like me. The best barber’s chair was covered with leather and decorated with ornate designs on the metal. The foot and head rests could swivel and they always had that old leather smell. And then it happened… the barber began to pump that arm lever and the chair moved up or down. The first time I experienced that it was the best thing in the world. To a little boy, the barber’s chair was a great experience. I imagined myself in a spaceship every time!
Since then, I always looked to see what type of barber’s chair each barbershop had and I became and fan of them. Its design has changed a lot over the years. They come in any color that you can think of. There are so many styles and shapes and makes and models nowadays. And you can have them pimped out if you know the right people.
